The snow house
The little unicorn has built its igloo. It is made of snow blocks laid in rows that get smaller toward the top, and its entrance is a little arched tunnel. A sprig of holly and fir decorates the roof; a few icicles hang down one side. The unicorn sits in front, on a cushion, a striped scarf around its neck and a sprig of holly in its mane. Next to it grows a little decorated fir tree.
Warm in the cold
An igloo is a real house, built by the Inuit of the Far North. People are often surprised to learn that it is warmer inside than out: the snow holds in the heat, like a blanket. The unicorn seems to know it. It smiles, nicely settled, while the snowflakes fall around it.
Blocks to color one by one
At six, the igloo is a fine challenge: each block is its own space, and there are many of them, on the dome as well as the tunnel. You can color them row by row, starting from the bottom. The tall format leaves room around the scene for the snowflakes and the little dots of snow.
White on white
A white igloo on white snow doesn’t show. The trick is to play with very light blues and grays: a pale blue block, a gray block, a block left white, like ice reflecting the sky. The holly, the fir tree and the scarf then bring the only bright colors on the page: green, red, and whatever color you like for the stripes.
A word for the grown-up: build a little igloo together out of sugar cubes, stuck to each other with a bit of icing. Row after row, your child understands how the dome holds up, and snack time is ready.
