The unicorn’s vegetable garden
The unicorn is tending its vegetable garden. Crowned with flowers, a little star on its forehead, it smiles with its eyes closed while a watering can floats in front of it and pours its drops onto the carrots. Two rows of carrots are already peeking out of the soil, and on the right grows a big head of lettuce. The bunny, sitting on the left, eyes the carrots; the chick, on the right, keeps watch over the lettuce.
A magic watering can
Nobody is holding the watering can: it is the unicorn’s magic that tips it. The drops fall in a fine shower on the soil, and the whole garden enjoys the fine weather under the big rainbow. A ladybug goes by at the top right, butterflies flutter among the flowers. The page tells what children love about gardens: watering, watching things grow, waiting for picking time.
A tidy garden
The carrots form small, repeated areas, all alike: a calm exercise, one carrot after another. The unicorn, the watering can and the lettuce are big shapes, easy to fill at four. The lettuce leaves, curly and layered, need a bit more attention, like the flowers poking up in the corners.
Orange, green and brown
The carrots take their orange, the leafy tops and the lettuce every shade of green. The garden soil gets colored brown, in wide strokes. The watering can can be a bold blue or green, and the drops a light blue. That leaves the rainbow above the scene, and the ladybug, red with black spots.
A word for the grown-up: cut the top off a carrot and set it in a saucer with a little water, near a window. In a few days, new leafy tops sprout, and your child can water them every morning, just like the unicorn.
