Hands in the dirt
Kneeling at the edge of a garden bed, a mom with a ponytail plants a young seedling. She wears an apron, and a little trowel and a seed packet stick out of its pocket. Beside her, her little one, in a hat with a flower on it, digs in the soil with a trowel, a heart on their T-shirt.
A unicorn that waters
On the other side, the unicorn lifts a hoof and sends a sparkling spray of water from its horn, which falls in drops onto the flowers. The garden bed is edged with boards, with a little fence at the back. In the grass, the watering can waits: today, the unicorn is doing the watering. A smiling sun, two clouds and a butterfly complete the sky.
Three characters
The mom, the child and the unicorn are big shapes, easy to color at four. The spray of water is made of little drops and stars: color it light blue in a single sweep, or leave it white. The flowers in the bed get colored one by one.
Garden bed colors
The soil takes a dark brown, the boards around it a lighter brown. Mom’s apron can be green or blue, the child’s hat yellow like the sun. The flowers in the bed can be red, pink or purple, each one its own.
A word for the grown-up: in spring, sow sunflower seeds with your child in a big pot or in the yard. Every week, measure the stem against them together. By summer, the sunflower often grows taller than your child, and the gardener is very proud.
