The unicorn’s watering can
The unicorn holds a watering can at the tip of its hoof and sends a shower of drops onto a daisy. Its curly mane falls over its forehead, and it watches the children work with a pleased look. Behind it, a wooden fence closes off the garden, and flowers climb up the boards.
Two little gardeners
Kneeling in the dirt, a girl with pigtails, in a polka-dot dress and a backpack, digs at the foot of her flower with a little trowel. Across from her, a boy in a cap and overalls with a heart on the bib plants a young seedling. In a corner, a bucket full of garden tools waits beside two stacked pots.
Big shapes
The two children and the unicorn are big shapes, easy to color at four. The fence gets colored board by board, in a single brown. The flowers, clovers and pebbles are small: color them with the tip of the pencil, or leave them white.
Garden colors
The turned soil takes a dark brown, the grass a soft green. The sun smiles in yellow, and the butterflies can have orange or blue wings. The dress can be red with white dots, and the overalls blue, like a real gardener’s.
A word for the grown-up: give your child a plant of their own, in a pot on the windowsill. Before watering, show them how to push a finger into the soil: dry, we water; still damp, we wait until tomorrow. At four, they love doing this little test every morning.
