A ring on the paving stones

The ring goes around in a yard paved with big flagstones, on a circle drawn on the ground. Four dancers hold hands: a girl with pigtails tied with a ribbon, a princess with a crown whose gown bears a heart, a granny with glasses and a bun, and a boy seen from behind. In the foreground, the unicorn rears up laughing, surrounded by stars and hearts. In the background, a building with its door and steps, a slide, a swing, and a big tree in bloom.

The unicorn joins the party

On this page, the unicorn is not holding anyone’s hand, but it is dancing as much as the others: up on its hind legs at the edge of the circle, it keeps up with the ring in its own way. “Dansons la capucine” is a French song for schoolyards and gardens, and the tree in bloom says it is spring. At six, children like to spot what gives away the season in a drawing.

A grid on the ground

The flagstones form a grid of big squares, clean and regular, to fill one by one. The dancers are tighter: the arms cross in the middle of the circle, and the clothes carry small details — the heart on the gown, the bow in the hair, the flowers on the tree. It is a page for six-year-olds that alternates big areas and small ones.

Hearts to find

The hearts are everywhere: on the princess’s gown, on the girl’s dress, around the unicorn. Coloring them all the same color, a bright red or pink, makes them stand out like a thread running from one end of the page to the other. The flagstones can alternate two grays, or a gray and a beige, like real paving.

A word for the grown-up: suggest that your child look for all the hearts in the drawing before picking up the pencils. They then color them first, in a single color, and see the page take shape right away.
