Perfectly round windows
Behind the ring stands a house with perfectly round windows, each one divided into four by a cross: one under the roof, three around the rounded door. A chimney, a scalloped roof, trees and bushes complete the setting. In front, four dancers go around holding hands: a girl with pigtails, a boy in overalls, a mother with a bun and a princess with a crown. And on the right, half hidden behind them, the unicorn peeks in.
Who is hiding behind the ring?
The unicorn is not in the ring, nor quite beside it: you only see its head and the top of its body, behind the princess. That is the little game of this page. While the ring goes around to the tune of “Dansons la capucine”, the French playground song, someone is watching and waiting for a turn. At six, children spot this detail quickly and like to explain it: it will join in on the next round, or it does not dare yet.
Circles within circles
The windows are the pattern of the page: small circles cut into four, tight curved areas that ask you to turn the pencil instead of pushing it in a straight line. The dancers overlap: the arms of the girl, the boy and the princess cross in the middle, and each line needs to be followed carefully before coloring.
Windowpanes and sunshine
The windowpanes can stay white, or take a very light blue, so you can tell they are glass. The wall takes a soft color, the door and chimney a stronger one. The half-hidden unicorn deserves bright colors: it is the one to find at first glance.
A word for the grown-up: before coloring, ask your child to count the round windows, then to find the unicorn. Two little searches that make them look at the whole page before choosing where to start.
