The ring is not closed yet
Four people hold hands in a line in the middle of a big open space: a girl with pigtails, a boy in overalls, a granny in glasses and a princess in a ruffled gown. The circle is not closed yet; both ends of the chain are still free. In front of them, a small unicorn with a star on its side watches. In the background, a simple house with its door, its step and its window, a tree, a bush and three little clouds.
At the neighbor’s
“Y a pas de pain chez nous, y en a chez la voisine” — “there’s no bread at our house, there’s some at the neighbor’s”: the French song of the round dance talks about the house next door, and the page draws it in the background, as if the ring were forming in front of it. A round dance always starts this way, with a chain of hands waiting to close. This one may be waiting only for the unicorn to go all the way around.
Plenty of space
The drawing leaves big open areas: the ground, the sky, the wall of the house. They are easy areas, filled with broad strokes, which rest the hand between two characters. The characters themselves are made of medium, clean areas. The princess’s gown, with its scalloped ruffles, is the finest part.
The ground first
A big area to fill is a chance to try coloring in long strokes, always in the same direction: the ground in green, from one end to the other, then the sky in light blue. The characters come next, each with one main color. The wall of the house can stay pale, so the ring stands out in front of it.
A word for the grown-up: ask your child who is going to close the ring. The unicorn? They themselves? They can draw the missing person on the sheet, at one end of the chain.
