Recess
The round dance is going on in the middle of a schoolyard. You can tell from the building at the back, with its double door and paned windows, a slide and its ladder, a swing, a low brick wall. On the ground, two hopscotch grids are drawn in chalk, one still blank, the other numbered 1, 2, 3. In the ring: a curly-haired boy running, a girl with pigtails, a lady in glasses, a princess with a crown and a boy seen from behind. The unicorn dances beside them, standing on its hind legs.
The schoolyard game
“Dansons la capucine” is a French playground song sung while going around in a circle, and on the last word, “you!”, everyone crouches down. It is the schoolyard game above all, like the hopscotch drawn right next to it: at four, children often discover both in the same year, at school. The page gathers those memories, and the unicorn is only waiting for the next round to join in.
Characters up front
The five dancers fill the bottom of the sheet: they are the biggest, cleanest areas, just right for a four-year-old’s hand. The background is made of straight lines — the building, the wall, the slide — and of small squares: the windowpanes and the two hopscotch grids. Those squares are good ground for practicing staying inside a line, one at a time, without rushing.
A hopscotch in every color
The numbered hopscotch can take one color per square, the way you would decorate it in chalk. The schoolyard ground gets a light gray, laid on broadly, and the dancers’ clothes take the bright colors. The princess’s gown and the unicorn’s mane are the two places where the most colors can go at once.
A word for the grown-up: once the page is done, draw a hopscotch in chalk, in the yard or on the sidewalk, with the same numbers as in the picture. Your child finds in real life what they have just colored.
