The unicorn in the ring

Here, the unicorn is not watching: it is dancing. Standing on its hind legs, it holds the hand of a girl with pigtails, and the ring goes around with a boy, a mother with a bun, a princess with a crown and a second boy in the foreground. Everyone is laughing, eyes squeezed shut. Behind them, a house with a scalloped tile roof, a chimney, a rounded door and a dormer window, a tree, flowers, a winding path, and a sun smiling between the clouds.

A ring everyone can join

A round dance has no reserved places: you take hands, and the circle grows. “Dansons la capucine”, the French playground song, is sung “chez nous” — at our house — and “chez la voisine”, at the neighbor’s, like a neighborhood song. On this page, a mother, a princess and a unicorn go around with the children, and that mix is what makes people smile. At six, you can ask: who else would you like to bring into the ring?

Tiles one by one

The roof is covered in scalloped tiles, dozens of small rounded areas lined up in rows: it is the precision challenge of the page, just right for a six-year-old’s hand. The ring in the foreground is tighter than it looks: six characters whose arms meet, hands touching, interlocking areas that need to be told apart before coloring.

A two-tone roof

For the roof, alternating two shades from one row to the next — a red and an orange, for example — instantly gives it the look of a real roof. The path is colored beige, the grass a soft green, and the sun a strong yellow. One main color per dancer, never repeated on their neighbor, and the ring reads at a glance.

A word for the grown-up: start by counting the dancers in the ring together, unicorn included. Six: that is how many colors to pick before starting, and your child can line them up in the order of the ring.
