A big circle
Six dancers hold hands to make a big circle in a meadow: a farmer with a mustache, in a hat, a plaid shirt, overalls and boots, a girl with pigtails, a boy in a cap and short overalls, a curly-haired boy, a child with a hood pulled up, and the little unicorn, with stars in its mane and at the tip of its horn.
In the sun
They are all smiling or laughing. Behind them, the sun peeks out halfway behind the hills, and a few clouds drift by. Flowers and clovers grow in the grass, and two butterflies flutter around the circle.
One dancer at a time
With their clothes, the six characters make lots of little spaces: at four, you can color one at a time, working your way around the circle. The meadow and the sky in the middle are big simple areas.
One color per dancer
Each dancer can have their own main color, so they are easy to tell apart in the circle. The farmer’s overalls are often blue, his plaid shirt red and white. The sun is yellow, the meadow green, and the unicorn keeps a pale coat with gold stars.
A word for the grown-up: play “The Farmer in the Dell” in a circle with family or friends: one child in the middle is the farmer and, with each verse, picks who joins them. At the end, the one left standing alone becomes the farmer for the next round.
