A stop on a big flower

A ladybug has stopped on a big open flower, at eye level. It is smiling, its antennae are curled, and its round wings are covered in fat dots. Around it, nobody really moves: the boy raises his arms, a sun embroidered on his T-shirt, the little girl with a bow in her hair waves, and the unicorn tilts its head, its mane dotted with stars. Behind, a smiling sun, clouds, round trees and a pale path running down between the hills. The foreground is full of grasses and flowers.

The second page of the song

This is sheet 2 of 5 in the “Coccinelle demoiselle” series. The song tells of a ladybug you do not want to make fly away: you set it on your hand, you follow it from flower to flower, you walk it to school. Here it makes its first stop, between the outstretched hand of sheet 1 and the meeting of sheet 3. The five drawings do not follow the song — it counts the ladybug’s spots — but set side by side on the table they make a run of pictures the child narrates alone.

The busiest of the series

There is markedly more to fill than on the previous sheet, and this is the busiest of the five. The petals of the big flower, the dress, the starry mane, the pattern on the T-shirt, the clouds, the rays of the sun, the whole foreground of grasses and flowers. Several areas are under a centimetre, and you have to hold the pencil short not to stray. It does not get finished in one go: it is a sheet you come back to, and it fills a good hour.

A rule about colors

Set a simple rule before starting: one single color for every flower on the page, another for all the foliage. The constraint fits in one sentence, and it gives a sheet that holds together instead of one where every area goes its own way. Keep the big central flower for last, in yellow or orange: it is the only pale place where the red ladybug stands out. Colored pencils suit this better than markers, because of the small gaps between the petals.

A word for the grown-up: before the pencils come out, look together for everything that grows on the page — the big flower, the grasses, the trees, the little flowers at the bottom. Naming things before filling them anchors the vocabulary, and the child spots details they would have colored without seeing.
