The shop is open
Beside her counter, the little dressmaker unicorn welcomes her customers, in an apron with pockets tied with a bow. On the counter, a cash register carries a sign that reads “OPEN”; next to it sit a jar, a little plant, a notebook and a pair of scissors. Above the shop window, a starry awning and a string of pennants: a star, a heart, a moon, stripes and a spiral.
Everything she has sewn
On the left, a rack shows a dress with a bow, a striped T-shirt with a star and a striped sweater, under a hat with bear ears. On the right, on a shelf, heart-shaped sunglasses, a headband with a bow, a sock and a smiling handbag; below hang a tutu dress, a jacket with badges, patched overalls and a striped scarf. In the corner: the sewing machine, a spool of thread, a basket of yarn and its knitting needles.
A page for sharp eyes
At six, children love pages where they keep finding a new detail, and this one is full of them. Each piece of clothing is a small area with its stripes, buttons or ruffles. The unicorn in the middle offers a bigger surface to rest on between two details. A rainbow and two smiling clouds frame the shop.
Dressing up the shop
Each piece of clothing can have its own color, as in a real store: a pink dress, a sweater with blue and white stripes, overalls in denim blue. The balls of yarn in the basket each get a different color, and the sewing machine a single bright one. The rainbow, at the top right, gathers all the colors of the page.
A word for the grown-up: punch a few holes in a piece of cardboard and give your child a plastic needle and a length of yarn to join them. It is a first step toward sewing, and a great activity for patience.
