A walk by the castle

A little princess leads her unicorn by the bridle. She wears a crown, two braids tied with bows and a long-sleeved dress, buttoned down the front, with flowers on the skirt. She is smiling. The unicorn, with flowers in its mane, lifts a front leg and happily follows her.

The castle in the hills

Behind them stands a stone castle, with its three pointed towers, its flags, its windows and its big door. It is surrounded by hills, trees and bushes. Flowers and a clover grow in the grass, and two clouds drift across the sky.

Well-separated shapes

The princess and the unicorn are big shapes, easy to color at four. The castle is made of straight shapes, with its stones drawn in. The unicorn’s bridle is a long thin band, to color with the tip of the pencil.

A fairy-tale castle

The castle can be stone gray, or pink like in fairy tales, with blue roofs and red flags. The princess’s dress takes her favorite color, and the unicorn’s bridle red or brown leather. The hills are green, paler in the distance.

A word for the grown-up: play horse and rider with a scarf as reins: your child, behind you, steers by calling out “right,” “left,” “straight ahead” or “stop.” It is a fun way to learn left from right.
