A living swing
No swing set here: the unicorn itself holds up the swing. One rope comes from its mouth, the other from its neck, and the little seat sways right in front of its legs. The baby sits on it, in a bonnet with a bow and overalls with a star, laughing out loud. Behind, a young girl in an apron pushes gently, her hands on the rope. The unicorn, saddled up, doesn’t move a hoof: it smiles down at the little one.
Big-kid patience
Pushing a swing takes gentleness: not too hard, not too high. The young girl understands that, and so does the unicorn, standing still so the baby can swing without fear. At four, many children move to the other side of the swing: first they ask to be pushed, then they want to push a doll or a stuffed animal themselves.
Three characters, three sizes
The unicorn fills the right half of the sheet: its body is one big area, easy to fill. The young girl and the baby are smaller, with details to take care of — the flowered apron pocket, the bow on the bonnet, the buttons on the overalls. All around, the meadow is dotted with daisies, a tulip and leafy sprigs, and the sky holds a sun, two clouds and a few butterflies.
Colors for an afternoon at the park
The sun gets its yellow; the sky can stay white or take a very light blue. The saddle and its knotted girth are a chance for a bold color, red or purple, that stands out against the unicorn’s pale coat. Soft colors suit the baby: a pink or pale yellow bonnet, sky-blue overalls. The curly mane, finally, is waiting for every color in the box.
A word for the grown-up: at the park, invite your child to sit their stuffed animal on the swing and push it very gently, like the young girl in the picture. They discover the pleasure of looking after someone smaller.
