Evening at the stable
In a wooden stable, a girl with a ponytail is looking after the unicorn. Wearing a dress with a round collar and an apron with a pocket, she brushes its mane, and the unicorn looks at her with a smile. Above them, a wooden sign hanging from a nail reads “ÉCURIE MAGIQUE” — French for “magic stable” — between two crescent moons.
A stable unlike any other
It has everything a stable needs: two hay bales, a pitchfork, a bucket full of grain, a tied sack, a horseshoe on the wall. But the lantern hanging from the ceiling is full of stars, tiny butterflies and sparkles float in the air, and through the window with its open shutters you can see the moon, a cloud and the night stars. A climbing plant winds around the window.
The gesture that matters
Brushing a horse — or a unicorn — is a moment of trust: you do it gently, in the direction of the hair, talking softly. The girl takes care, and the unicorn lets her. For a four-year-old, the scene says something simple and important: caring for an animal starts with being gentle.
Warm colors and the night
The stable wood gets colored in browns and ochers, the hay in straw yellow. Through the window, the night sky can turn dark blue, to make the moon and stars shine in yellow. The unicorn, in the middle, is the biggest area on the page; its flowery mane and tail can gather several colors. And the girl’s apron deserves a cheerful color.
A word for the grown-up: in the evening, invite your child to brush their doll’s hair, a stuffed animal’s mane, or your own hair, very gently. It is a tender little ritual that soothes before bedtime.
