A meeting along the way
A little explorer has stopped short: in front of him stands a unicorn, much bigger than he is. He raises his hand to say hello, with a big smile under his mustache. He has all a traveler’s gear: a wide-brimmed hat with a feather, a patched jacket, a belt, a shoulder bag, boots. The unicorn looks at him kindly, its horn and mane sprinkled with stars.
Hello, unicorn
The little explorer’s gesture is one of the first we teach children: saying hello. He has crossed woods and meadows, and now he comes upon the most beautiful discovery of all. The unicorn doesn’t run away: it smiles. The whole page lives in that moment of meeting, among a few flowers, near two mushrooms.
Two well-drawn characters
The unicorn takes up almost the whole right half of the sheet: its body, head and legs are big, clear areas, easy to fill at four. The little stars in the mane and tail need more precision. The explorer, smaller, is made of many pieces — the hat, the feather, the jacket, the bag, the boots — each of which can have its own color.
The colors of adventure
For the explorer, nature’s colors work well: a beige or khaki hat, a green jacket, brown boots, and a bright red feather to liven things up. The unicorn can take softer colors and a rainbow mane, where the stars stay white or gold. The grass and flowers complete the scene.
A word for the grown-up: glue two cardboard tubes side by side to make a pair of binoculars, then set off exploring the yard or the park. Your child says hello to each discovery — a flower, a snail, a bird — just as the little explorer greets his unicorn.
