A bundled-up unicorn
Wearing a knitted hat with a big pom-pom and a striped, fringed scarf around its neck, the little unicorn sits in the snow. It is smiling, very pleased.
A pile of presents
Beside it, a pile of seven presents rises almost as high as the unicorn: packages of every size, tied with ribbons, some of them striped. Around them, fir branches and holly frame the scene, and snowflakes fall.
Clean shapes
The unicorn is a big shape, easy to color at four. The presents are well-separated squares and rectangles: each one gets its own color, and its ribbon another. The snowflakes can stay white.
Christmas colors
The hat and scarf can be red and white, or green and red. The packages take every color, with gold ribbons. The fir branches are green, and the holly berries bright red.
A word for the grown-up: at the start of December, make a paper chain of twenty-four links with your child, one for each day until Christmas. Every evening, they cut one off: the chain gets shorter, and the wait becomes something you can see. At four, counting the days left is still hard; the links do it for them.
