Three friends on the blanket

Sitting cross-legged on a checkered blanket, a boy in overalls bursts out laughing. Next to him, a girl with pigtails tied with bows, in a dress with a round collar, sits with her hands on her knees. Across from them, the unicorn has settled on the blanket, with flowers in its mane and tail.

The picnic basket

In the middle, the wicker basket is overflowing: a baguette, a jar, an apple, a bunch of grapes and strawberries, with a napkin. Two cookies and a few pieces of fruit lie on the blanket, and strawberries even grow in the grass. The sun shines beside a cloud, and four butterflies flutter above the flowers.

A page for six-year-olds

The squares on the blanket, the food in the basket and the many flowers make a detailed page: it suits children six and up. Color every other square, like a checkerboard, in a single color. The fruit in the basket is small: each piece gets its own color, with the tip of the pencil.

A summer day

The blanket can be red and white, or blue and white. The strawberries are red, the grapes purple or green, the baguette golden. The yellow sun and the blue sky say right away that it is summer.

A word for the grown-up: before a picnic, make a list with your child of everything to bring: the blanket, the bread, the fruit, the water, the napkins. At six, they write the words they know and draw the others. When it’s time to go, they check off the list, and nothing gets forgotten.
