Singing while coloring
Where “Frère Jacques” comes from, and how it is sung.
One of the best-known French songs in the world, sung in dozens of languages — in English, “Are You Sleeping, Brother John?”. Brother Jacques is still asleep when he should be ringing the morning bells. It is sung as a round: one voice starts, the second comes in when the first reaches the second line, and soon all the bells ring together. Gustav Mahler even turned it into a slow, solemn march in his First Symphony.
