Fast asleep
The unicorn has fallen asleep in a canopy bed, curled up, its head on the pillow. A few z’s float above its horn. The bed curtains are tied with ribbons, a heart decorates the headboard and a row of stars lines the blanket. Through the window, a crescent moon is sleeping too, eyes closed, among the stars.
A tidy room
Everything is in its place: the nightstand and its starry lamp, with a book beside it; the dresser with three drawers marked with a star, a crown and a plush star on top; a crown picture on the wall, a string of pennants, a green plant, a rug dotted with stars. It is a princess’s room, calm and soft, ready for the night.
Furniture to color
The furniture offers nice rectangular surfaces, perfect for neat coloring: the dresser drawers, the nightstand, the bedposts. The curtains, with their folds, need a little more care. At six, it can be fun to count all the stars in the room before coloring them.
Night colors
Behind the window, the sky can turn midnight blue to make the moon and stars stand out in yellow. Inside the room, soft colors work well: pink or lilac for the curtains, light wood for the furniture, golden stars everywhere. The bedside lamp, if you color it yellow, seems to be on.
A word for the grown-up: at bedtime, take a tour of your child’s room together and look for what it shares with the unicorn’s: a lamp, a dresser, curtains, a stuffed animal. Saying good night to each thing is a little ritual that helps them fall asleep.
