A walk under the fir trees

A little unicorn trots through the forest, among tall fir trees, its mouth open in a happy laugh. Stars dot its mane and tail. The ground is covered with grass, ferns and fallen leaves, with two mushrooms and two flowers.

Forest neighbors

On a branch to the left, a big-eyed owl watches it go by. To the right, perched on the branch of a big trunk, a little bird is watching too. The unicorn is not alone: the forest is full of quiet friends.

Fir trees in tiers

The fir trees are drawn in tiers, branch by branch: each tier is a space to color. The ones in front are big, the ones in the back smaller. At four, the unicorn in the middle and the thick trunks are easy to color; the fallen leaves are smaller.

Every shade of green

The fir trees take a range of greens, darker in front and lighter in the back, to add depth. The trunks get colored brown, the mushrooms red or beige. The owl can be brown or gray, the bird blue.

A word for the grown-up: on a walk, collect leaves of different shapes. At home, slip them under a sheet of paper and rub over them with the side of a crayon: the veins appear as if by magic.
