A conversation on a branch

On the left, a small unicorn with starry eyes looks to the right, its mouth open in a big smile, its mane and tail dotted with stars. On the right, an owl perches on an oak branch, big round glasses on its face: it is talking too. On the branch, a few leaves and two acorns. At the bottom, clovers and a tuft of grass: that is all the setting there is, and the two characters take up all the room.

From the top of its big oak

“Du haut de son grand chêne, il répond au hibou” — “from the top of its big oak, it answers the owl”: in the French song “Dans la forêt lointaine”, it is the cuckoo, perched on its oak, that answers the owl. Here, the owl has taken the branch, learned-looking in its glasses, and the unicorn chats with it from below. The acorns on the branch show that it really is an oak, as in the words. A detail children find on their own, once they have been told what to look for.

Nice, well-closed areas

Both characters are big, made of clean, well-closed areas: the body, the head, the mane, the owl’s wings, the feathers on its belly drawn as small arcs. The glasses are two big circles that can be colored or left clear. The stars in the mane are the only small areas. A calm page, finished without tiring at four.

A wise owl, a gentle unicorn

The owl is colored in browns and grays, with lighter belly feathers; its glasses can take a bright color, red or blue, which gives it character. The unicorn takes soft shades. The acorns have two parts: the cup, darker, and the nut, lighter. A pale blue sky behind them both, and the page is done.

A word for the grown-up: make the two characters talk while your child colors. What does the owl say to the unicorn? What does the unicorn answer? Making up their conversation gives the page meaning and keeps the voice busy while the hand works.
