The whole group outside the school

The school fills the whole back of the page: a pitched roof, a bell tower with its bell, a round dormer and the word ÉCOLE — French for school — written large on a sign above the door. Windows with small panes line up on either side. In front, the whole group poses as if for a first-day photo: the unicorn on the left, the little girl with her star satchel, the boy with his schoolbag and his little heart bag, and the ladybug standing on the right, two hearts at the tips of its antennae. A path runs down toward the bottom of the sheet.

The end of the rhyme

Sheet 5 of 5 in the “Coccinelle demoiselle” series, the last one. In the song the ladybug finally flies away; here it walks the children to the door before leaving. The five sheets go round its theme: the hand, the flower, the two ladybugs, the park, the school. Pinned side by side above a desk, or simply laid in a row on the table, they read like a frieze — and a child who knows the rhyme can sing it while pointing to each sheet.

The most detailed of the five

The paned windows, the bell, the letters on the sign, the straps of the schoolbag, the stripes on the ladybug’s belly: the small areas run into the dozens. It is a real undertaking, the kind you come back to over two days without finishing at one go — and that is quite right. For a younger child, keep the park sheet instead: here the window panes are too tight for a fat marker.

Perfect for the start of the school year

This is the sheet to print in early September, or the evening before a first day. Coloring a school full of friends the night before often does more than a long reassuring speech. For colors, keep the building to two shades only — a pale wall, a dark roof — and save the bright colors for the characters in front: the eye goes straight to them, and the school stays a backdrop. The ÉCOLE sign colors letter by letter, one color each; it is the detail children finish first.

A word for the grown-up: write your child’s name lightly in pencil above the door before handing over the sheet. They recognise themselves in the drawing, and they take noticeably more care. The same trick works with a classmate’s name.
