A nest full of stars
In the middle of the page, a big nest of criss-crossed twigs, and in it, a round little chick with a small crest on its head. Stars are tucked between the twigs of the nest, and more twigs lie on the grass around it. On the right, a small unicorn standing on its hind legs laughs with its eyes closed: it holds stars between its hooves, ready to add them to the nest. Stars float everywhere, and a few clovers and flowers grow along the bottom.
Decorating a friend’s home
The lark builds its nest right on the ground, in a hollow in a field, with grass and twigs. Here, the unicorn helps decorate it, and the idea speaks to children straight away: bringing something pretty to a friend, for their home. The page is tied to “Alouette, gentille alouette”, the French song about a lark, through its bird, but it tells its own little story, which your child can carry on out loud while coloring.
Twigs not to mix up
The nest is the hardest part: dozens of crossing twigs, each one a narrow area. At four, they can all be colored in a single brown, without trying to tell them apart: the nest is still a nest. The chick and the unicorn, on the other hand, are made of big simple shapes. The stars, many and small, are good practice for the tip of the pencil.
A brown nest, golden stars
A medium brown for the whole nest, then a darker brown gone over a few twigs only, and the nest gains depth without effort. The stars tucked inside then stand out in yellow or gold. The chick is colored in light shades, to stand out against the brown of the nest. Give the stars the unicorn is holding the same color as the ones in the nest: it shows that it is bringing them.
A word for the grown-up: before coloring, look together for the stars hidden in the nest. They blend in with the twigs, and spotting them first avoids covering them in brown by mistake.
