Looking up
Three children stand in a meadow and all look up at the sky, where a lark flies by, wings open. On the left, a boy in a cap, a T-shirt and shorts; in the middle, a girl with a ponytail tied with a bow, in a dress, a bag on her back; on the right, a curly-haired boy in a sweater, pointing at the bird. Those two are holding hands. A small unicorn stands beside them, a star on the tip of its horn. Behind them, hills and two clouds.
“Look, up there!”
It is a moment every child knows: someone points at a bird, and everyone looks up at the same time. That is how you spot a lark in the fields, by its song, long before you see it. The page ties “Alouette, gentille alouette”, the French song about a lark, to a real walk with a real group of friends, and every child can recognize themselves in one of the three.
Three children, three outfits
The children are the heart of the page: clothes, hair, shoes, everything is made of medium, clean, well-closed areas, just right for a four-year-old’s hand. The meadow is freer: tufts of grass, flowers and clovers scattered here and there, colored or not. The sky and the hills make big restful areas. The bird, small and placed at the very top, gets colored last.
Dressing the children
Choosing the colors of the clothes is the real fun of this page: the cap, the T-shirt, the dress, the bag, the sweater. A tip: give each child a different main color, so you can tell them apart at a glance. The meadow takes a light green, the hills in the back an even softer green, and the sky can stay white so the bird shows up well.
A word for the grown-up: ask your child which of the three they would like to be. They often color that one in their own colors, their sweater, their shoes, and the page becomes a bit of a self-portrait.
