A bird above, a unicorn below

The page comes down to two characters. Up top, a plump lark perches on a leafy branch, beak open: it is singing, with a little crest on top of its head. Below, a small unicorn sitting in the grass listens with a smile, a star on the tip of its horn and more in its mane and tail. A few flowers, tufts of grass and stars complete the scene. All around, plenty of white.

One sings, one listens

It is the simplest scene you can draw from “Alouette, gentille alouette”, the French song about a lark: the bird sings, the unicorn listens. No need to know the words to understand it. A two-year-old points at the bird, then the unicorn, and often makes the song themselves. The song itself, with its verses that grow longer each time round, will come later; here, all there is to remember is that a bird is singing in a tree.

Big shapes, thick lines

Both characters are big and round, drawn with a thick, even line. The lark’s body, its wing, its tail, the unicorn’s head and body: each area is wide enough for a fat marker to fill in a few passes. The leaves on the branch are smaller, but well closed. The stars in the mane are the only fine details, and they can perfectly well stay white: the unicorn still looks lovely.

One color per character

At two, one color per character is enough: a yellow or an orange for the lark, a pink or a purple for the unicorn, a green for the leaves. The page is made to be swept with a marker, not filled to the millimeter. If your child wants more, the mane and tail can take a second shade. Print it twice: the first sheet is for trying, the second one is for keeping.

A word for the grown-up: make the lark sing. Do a little “tweet-tweet” each time your child colors the bird; they will carry on by themselves. At this age, a sound tied to a gesture helps them stay on the page longer.
