A whole day on one page
This is the most crowded sheet in the series. At the top, a very wide sky: a round sun, five bubble-shaped clouds, three birds drawn as simple Vs. Then the horizon line, crisp, and the sea covered in little waves. On the sand, a woman with a bun holds out her hand to three small ones: a girl in pigtails, a boy in overalls with his bag, and a unicorn whose tail carries a star. To the left, stretched out on the dune, the ferret, striped from its back to the tip of its tail. In front, a sandcastle, two shells, tufts of grass.
The ferret, that stranger
A ferret is a small carnivore with a long supple body, a cousin of the weasel, which sleeps sixteen hours a day and wakes up hopping sideways. Few children have ever seen one for real, and the word is often more familiar to them than the animal. On this sheet it is not at the center: it lies on the dune, apart from the group, head turned toward the sea. It is often the character children spot last — and the one they then choose, because they found it on their own.
Two sheets in one
The top and the bottom of the sheet do not ask for the same thing. The sky and the sea are two vast flat areas with no obstacle: you fill them in broad passes, and between them they take up nearly half the page. The bottom is full of small things: the pigtails, the overalls, the shells, the battlements of the castle, the blades of grass. It is that contrast that sets the age at 4 — you have to be able to alternate the broad gesture and the precise one, and above all to accept not finishing it all at once.
The sky first, laid flat
Start with the sky, with a colored pencil held on its side, rubbing flat across the full width: it is quick, it is satisfying, and the pale blue that comes out immediately brings the sea below into being. Keep a deeper blue for the water, and leave the sand almost white — a very light yellow is enough, or the foreground crushes everything. The sheet is narrower than the others: when printing, choose “fit to page” to keep the margins, or the sky gets trimmed.
A word for the grown-up: before handing over the pencils, look for the ferret together — it is small and it lies to the left, on the dune. One minute of searching, and the child enters the drawing through the door they opened themselves; that is almost always where they start.
