The miller is asleep

In the middle of the page, a wooden windmill on a stone base, with its wooden door, its small windows and four big sails. Circles and lines all around show that they are spinning at full speed. On the left, the miller sleeps on a hay bale, head on a pillow, with a pom-pom nightcap and a mustache, a little dream bubble above him. On the right, the unicorn tugs at the rope hanging from the mill. Butterflies, flowers and clouds complete the scene.

Your mill is going too fast

“Meunier, tu dors, ton moulin, ton moulin va trop vite” — “miller, you’re sleeping, your mill is going too fast”: the page draws the French song almost word for word. The miller is asleep, the sails are spinning too hard, and someone has to deal with it. What is the unicorn doing with its rope? Slowing the mill, waking the miller, playing bell-ringer? The song does not say, and it is a good question to ask your child.

Planks and stones

The mill is the most detailed part: the planks of the body, the visible bricks, the stones of the base, the slats of the sails. These are long, regular areas, easy to spot but numerous. The hay bale, the miller and the unicorn are made of rounder shapes. The circles that show the sails moving form bands that can stay white.

Wood and hay

The mill is colored in browns, lighter on the planks, darker on the roof; the stones of the base in gray. The hay bale takes a straw yellow. For the miller, a nightcap in a soft color, and his pillow white. The sails can take a canvas color, beige or off-white, to stand out against the sky.

A word for the grown-up: sing “Meunier, tu dors” faster and faster, like the mill running away with itself, then very softly, like the snoring miller. Your child colors to the rhythm of the song.
