Three friends, a snail, a path

The path starts at the bottom of the page and winds back up between the trees. The snail leads the way, all smiles, its spiral shell dotted with fat circles. Behind, a girl in a polka-dot dress holds the hand of a boy who is waving, and a starry unicorn stands to their right, its mane long. Three round trees take the middle, bushes close off the sides. In the sky: three clouds, a few stars and small hearts floating between the branches. Flowers grow in both bottom corners.

Between home and school

Sheet 2 of 5 in the “Petit escargot” series. The song tells nothing but a journey: a snail moving along with its house on its back. This sheet is that journey, drawn. It is a chance to recall what children already know about the animal: it is slow, it leaves a shiny trail behind it, it comes out mostly when the ground is damp. The path on the page joins the one the family takes in the morning, and it is often that connection that catches.

Large surfaces, and details as a bonus

The path crosses the full height of the sheet: it is the largest area on the page, and the easiest to fill. The characters are tall, their clothes cut into only three or four pieces, and the outline is even and good and black. It is the lightest of the five sheets in the series — but it is still a whole scene: three trees, bushes, the clouds, the hearts and stars in the sky. Those small elements are not compulsory, and the page stands without them; the path, the characters and the snail take a good half hour.

The path, one single color

Save the path for last, and do it in one pale beige, from bottom to top. It is the widest gesture on the page, and it finishes the drawing at a stroke. The hearts in the sky take a pink marker laid straight on very well. For the unicorn, two shades are enough: one for the mane and tail, one for the body. Print on A4 portrait with no scaling, so the path stays good and wide at the bottom of the sheet, where the very young start.

A word for the grown-up: lay the sheet flat and ask where the snail is going. A child often answers that it is going to school, before even knowing a school sheet exists. That answer is enough to launch the coloring.
