The house, the tree, the whole troop

The house is there, its roof striped like wooden boards, a chimney on the side, a half-moon window under the gable and two paned windows on the front. A big leafy tree borders it on the left, two smaller ones on the right, and a path winds behind the bushes. In front, the girl hugs a soft toy, the unicorn takes the center, the boy raises a hand to wave under his cap, and the mouse, standing on the right, has both arms in the air. Two butterflies cross the page. The format is taller than it is wide.

The last sheet of the series

Sheet 5 of 5 in the “Une souris verte” series. It is the return, and the end of the journey: after the meadow, the school, the park and the beach, the little troop goes home. A surprise awaits whoever looks at the sky — the sun shines at the top right, and five stars keep it company. It is a sky that does not choose, just as in the rhyme, where the mouse goes from oil to water with nobody ever knowing why. Nobody at this age takes offence, and that is a good thing.

A big house, and a garden full of detail

The house, the tree and the hills take up almost the whole surface in large simple shapes: a wall, a roof, a mass of foliage, two rises of ground. A younger child gets through them unaided, and recognises a house at first glance — which counts for a lot, because children mostly color what they can name. Around it, the garden swarms: the two paned windows, the half-moon of the gable, the boards of the roof, the three trees, the bushes, the two butterflies. Those details are optional: the page is complete even if they are left white.

The one that goes on the wall

This is the one that ends up on the fridge, because a colored house reads from a distance. Ask what color your own front door is and put it on the one in the drawing: the child steps straight into the scene. The striped roof lends itself to two alternating shades, every other board, which fills a long time for a very crisp result. Print on slightly thick paper, 120 gsm if you have it: the page holds better under a magnet, and the markers do not go through.

A word for the grown-up: lay the sheets of the series side by side on the table once this one is done, and sing the rhyme following the drawings. Seeing the whole journey spread out in front of them is what makes them want to start all over again tomorrow.
